“To be or not to be?” That is the question. William Shakespeare was a famous poet who lived during the Elizabethan era in England. He wrote many plays during his career, like “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” “Merchant of Venice,” and many sonnets like, “Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day?” (sonnet 18). Shakespeare was born on the 23th of April 1564 in a place called Stratford Upon Avon. Shakespeare was born into a prosperous family. His father was a successful glove maker. He then became the chief magistrate of the town council.
William Shakespeare was educated at the Kings New School in Stratford Upon Avon. Unfortunately, a lot of his education records have been lost.
When Shakespeare was 18, he was married to Anne Hathway who was 26 at the time. They had their first child 6 months later. He also had a twin son and daughter Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died of the black plague aged 11. His 2 daughters also died before adulthood.
William Shakespeare left Stratford to go to London where he started to write for the stage in the 1580s. He began by mending the plays of other and then started his own. His plays were very popular and he was requested to repeat the performances, although he mainly wrote plays, he even performed in some of his own as well. When the globe theatre was build in 1599, Shakespeare became a share holder. He died on birthday in 1616 from an unknown cause.
